City of Victorville Uturn Prevention Program
Uturn’s mission is guiding youth toward living a gang-free life by aligning with community leaders in education, business, law enforcement, and faith based organizations, and providing individual mentors, focusing on life choices, family values, and a healthy, positive, lifestyle.
The Uturn Prevention Program is a new program designed to divert elementary-aged at-risk youth from being recruited into gang involvement or activity. Unlike many prevention programs that target entire neighborhoods or populations, Uturn focuses on helping families who are willing to make a long-term commitment to the program and who are willing to develop and maintain positive and rewarding connections within the community. Participating families must commit to participate in the program for a minimum of three years. Through the program, the family will receive free services, including, but not limited to workshop classes, field trips, and community support.
Program Objectives:
To engage at-risk youth by a process of family restructuring which promotes self-sufficiency and empowerment by providing comprehensive social services and links to development services that strengthen the family foundation, through:
- Creative program development
- Dedicated committee members reaching out to at-risk youth with alternatives, mentoring, and providing positive perspectives in making good choices.
- Forming a circle of support for the family unit by providing resources available in the community.
Uturn’s Target Population:
- Elementary-aged at-risk youths and their families
- Family consists of at least one parent or legal guardian
- Target youth must be maintained in the home and be considered to be “at-risk”
Goals:
- Divert at-risk youth from being recruited into gang involvement or significant association
- Impact the functioning of family units through comprehensive services
- Enhance parenting skills through parental training
- Promote financial opportunities for the family through job training and placement, money management training, and home ownership training
