Check your household pipes, exposed irrigation pipes, and outside faucets to make sure they have adequate insulation.
Wrap insulating tape around pipes in unheated areas such as garages.
Set heater thermostats to low during vacations instead of shutting them off.
Disconnect and drain outdoor hoses to prevent bursting either the hose or the faucet.
Decrease your watering schedule, and water lawns and landscaping between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to save water and to prevent freezing water on sidewalks and streets.
Know where you home's water shut-off valve is located.
Keep cabinet doors under sinks open, allowing the warm air inside the house to circulate and warm exposed pipes.
If pipes freeze, warm them GRADUALLY with a hair dryer or space heater.
Pipes that warm too fast can break.
